Textile Fabrication

Textile fabrication is the process of converting fibers into fabrics through methods such as spinning, weaving, knitting, braiding, or nonwoven assembly, enabling materials with controlled structure and performance. In bioengineering, fabrication conditions and fiber arrangement determine properties including porosity, strength, flexibility, surface area, and fluid transport, while material selection can support biological compatibility. These characteristics make textile-based materials useful for tissue-engineering scaffolds, wound dressings, filtration systems, and wearable biomedical devices. By combining manufacturing control with biological design principles, textile fabrication enables structured materials that interact with cells, tissues, or physiological fluids and supports advances in regenerative medicine and medical technology.

The fabrication of electrically addressable, high-aspect-ratio (> 1000:1) metal nanowires separated by gaps of single nanometers using either sacrificial layers of aluminum and silver or self-assembled monolayers as templates is described. These nanogap structures are fabricated without a clean room or any photo- or electron-beam lithographic processes by a form of edge lithography known as nanoskiving.
