Dual Infection

Dual infection is the simultaneous or sequential presence of two distinct infectious agents in the same host, tissue, or cell, making it important for understanding disease complexity and treatment outcomes. The agents may compete for cellular resources, alter one another’s replication, or interact indirectly by changing host immune responses and tissue conditions. In biology and medicine, studying dual infection helps explain variations in disease severity, transmission, diagnostic results, and therapeutic response. It also supports surveillance of coinfections, guides treatment strategies, and clarifies how interactions among pathogens and their host shape disease progression.

Establishment of a Rat Model for Intrauterine Adhesions via Dual Injury: Curettage and Infection

2025

Intrauterine adhesions (IUAs), the most common pathological consequence of endometrial injury, severely impair reproductive function. Trauma and infection are widely recognized as key risk factors for IUA development. We have successfully established a reproducible rat model of IUAs by combining two critical injury methods: mechanical curettage and infectious induction with lipopolysaccharide.

Detecting SMAD Pathway Activation Using Dual Adenovirus Transduction

Source: Chen, H., et al. Live Cell Imaging of the TGF-β/Smad3 Signaling Pathway In Vitro and In Vivo Using an Adenovirus Reporter System. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates a method to study SMAD pathway activation in breast cancer cells using dual adenoviral infection. One virus delivers a constitutively expressed GFP gene, while the other carries an RFP reporter under a SMAD-sensitive promoter. Upon TGF-beta stimulation, SMAD proteins are activated, forming a complex that induces RFP...

This protocol describes techniques to measure infectious outcomes underlying secondary hospital-acquired infections in the immunosuppressive condition, first by establishing cecal ligation/puncture mice then challenging them with intranasal infection to create a clinically relevant model of immunosuppression sepsis.

Dual Fluorescence Imaging to Identify Differentiated Oligodendrocytes

Source: Schott, J. T., et al. Preparation of Rat Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cultures and Quantification of Oligodendrogenesis Using Dual-infrared Fluorescence Scanning. J. Vis. Exp. (2016). This video demonstrates the use of dual fluorescence imaging to evaluate the differentiation of oligodendrocytes from precursor cells (OPCs) isolated from a rat pup brain. The process includes fixing the cells, labeling specific markers with primary and fluorophore-conjugated secondary antibodies, and...
