Gastric Digestion

Gastric digestion is the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food in the stomach, an essential stage of digestion that prepares nutrients for absorption in the small intestine. Muscular contractions mix food with gastric juice, while hydrochloric acid denatures proteins and activates pepsin from its precursor, pepsinogen; mucus protects the stomach lining from acid and enzymes. This process converts the meal into a semi-liquid mixture called chyme, which is released gradually through the pyloric sphincter. Understanding gastric digestion helps explain nutrient processing, digestive disorders, medication effects, and how biological systems coordinate secretion, motility, protection, and regulated transport.

Gastric Phase of Digestion

2024

The gastric phase of digestion begins as soon as food enters the stomach. The incoming food bolus triggers neural and hormonal mechanisms, which last approximately 3 to 4 hours. During this phase, the stomach undergoes significant changes to prepare the food for further digestion and absorption. When food enters the stomach, it stretches the stomach walls and activates stretch receptors. This triggers local reflexes of the enteric nervous system, mediated through the myenteric plexus. These...

Laparoscopic Radical Gastrectomy for Remnant Gastric Cancer

2025

Laparoscopic radical gastrectomy for remnant gastric cancer has been increasingly adopted as a minimally invasive surgical approach in recent years. This article proposes a detailed operating procedure, aiming to provide practical technical guidance for surgeons and promote the broader adoption of laparoscopic surgery in managing remnant gastric cancer.

Exposing a Synthetic Oral Bacterial Community to Simulated Phases of Digestion

(2018)This video demonstrates the viability assessment of a synthetic oral microbial community during simulated oral, gastric, and intestinal digestion. Bacterial survival is quantified after each phase, revealing a progressive decline due to digestive stress.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Procedure: A Bariatric Surgical Procedure for Gastric Resectioning in Murine Model

2025

This video describes a bariatric surgery-Roux-en-Y procedure. This involves the cutting of the jejunum- the middle portion of the intestine- to generate two intestinal limbs. The biliary limb is attached to the existing intestinal loop and the alimentary limb is attached to the stomach, creating a gastric bypass. The gastric bypass created here helps to decrease the nutrient uptake and efficiently reduces body weight.
