Small Animal Fixator

A small animal fixator is an external fixation device used to stabilize fractured or surgically modified bones in laboratory animals, enabling controlled study of skeletal repair. It works by securing pins or screws within bone segments and linking them to a rigid frame outside the body, which maintains alignment while the tissue heals. In biology and preclinical research, small animal fixators provide reproducible models for investigating fracture healing, bone regeneration, implant performance, and the effects of mechanical stability on tissue formation. Their adjustable design can help researchers compare healing conditions and evaluate therapies before clinical translation.

Two basic types of preparation are used to visualize specimens with a light microscope: wet mounts and fixed specimens. The simplest type of preparation is the wet mount, in which the specimen is placed in a drop of liquid on the slide. A liquid specimen can be directly deposited on the slide using a dropper. Solid specimens, such as skin scraping, can be placed on the slide before adding a drop of liquid to prepare the wet mount. Sometimes the liquid is simply water, but stains are often added...
