Superfusion Perfusion Modes

Superfusion perfusion modes are experimental arrangements that continuously deliver oxygenated physiological solution across or through an isolated biological tissue, organ, or cell preparation while removing the bathing fluid. In a superfusion system, a pump or gravity-driven reservoir establishes a defined flow, and the incoming medium maintains chemical conditions as the effluent carries away released metabolites, drugs, or signaling molecules; changing flow direction or delivery pattern alters exposure and washout. These modes support controlled studies of tissue viability, secretion, electrophysiology, contractility, and pharmacological responses. In biology, they improve temporal control and reproducibility when researchers need to apply brief treatments or monitor rapid changes in living preparations.

Normothermic ex situ heart perfusion (ESHP), preserves the heart in a beating, semi-physiologic state. When performed in a working mode, ESHP provides the opportunity to perform sophisticated assessments of donor heart function and organ viability. Here, we describe our method for myocardial performance evaluation during ESHP.

What is a Mode?

2023

The mode is one of the commonly used measures of a central tendency. It is defined as the most frequent value in a data set. There can be more than one mode in a data set if multiple values have the same highest frequency. For instance, suppose that the Statistics exam scores of 20 students are: 50; 53; 59; 59; 63; 63; 72; 72; 72; 72; 72; 76; 78; 81; 83; 84; 84; 84; 90; 93. Here, the mode is 72, as it occurs most frequently, five times. A data set with two modes is called bimodal. For example,...

Antegrade Perfusion Model: An Ex Vivo Technique to Perfuse Isolated Mouse Heart

2025

This video describes an antegrade perfusion technique of an isolated mouse heart during which a perfusate is injected through the left ventricle, and eventually, it perfuses the entire myocardium. This method can be used to isolate cardiomyocytes from murine models and generate decellularized hearts for further downstream applications.

Ventilatory Modes

Mechanical ventilators are life-saving devices that support or replace spontaneous breathing. They deliver breaths to patients through varying methods known as ventilator modes. Understanding these modes is critical for healthcare providers managing patients with respiratory failure. There are three ventilatory modes: full support, partial support, and spontaneous. These are described below. Full Support Modes Full support modes include controlled mechanical ventilation, continuous mandatory...
