Neural Invasion

Neural invasion is a cancer-associated process in which malignant cells enter, surround, or migrate along nerves, linking tumor progression with the peripheral nervous system. Tumor cells and nerve-associated cells communicate through neurotrophic factors, cytokines, neurotransmitters, and extracellular-matrix signals that can promote directional migration, nerve remodeling, and survival within neural niches. In cancer research, studying this interaction helps explain local spread, recurrence, treatment resistance, and cancer-related pain, while tissue analysis and experimental coculture or organoid models can reveal its cellular basis. Defining these mechanisms may support prognostic assessment and the development of therapies that disrupt tumor-nerve communication.
