Organoid Characterization

Organoid characterization is the systematic analysis of three-dimensional, stem cell-derived tissue models to determine their structure, cellular composition, molecular features, and function. In cancer research, investigators combine microscopy, histology, immunostaining, genomic or transcriptomic profiling, and functional assays to compare organoids with the tumors from which they originate. These measurements reveal whether organoids preserve tumor heterogeneity, disease-associated biomarkers, growth behavior, and clinically relevant signaling pathways. Characterized organoids can therefore support cancer modeling, therapeutic screening, and studies of treatment resistance, while helping researchers evaluate how accurately a model represents patient tumor biology.

Organoids developed from mouse mammary glands were irradiated and characterized to assess epithelial traits and interactions with immune cells. Irradiated organoids can be used to better evaluate cell-cell interactions that may lead to tumor cell recruitment in irradiated normal tissue.

CRC Organoid Culture: A Method to Obtain 3D Organoids from Colorectal Cancer Cells
