Captive Zeros

Captive zeros are zeros located between nonzero digits in a numerical measurement, and they are significant because they record the precision represented by that value. Unlike leading zeros, which only position a decimal point, or some trailing zeros whose significance depends on notation, a captive zero counts automatically when determining significant figures; for example, 1.05 has three significant figures. Chemists use this rule when recording measurements, performing calculations, and reporting results, helping preserve meaningful precision through operations such as multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.

Complex Zeros

2025

Complex zeros are the solutions to polynomial equations that include imaginary numbers, specifically, numbers of the form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers and i is the imaginary unit defined by i2=-1. These zeros satisfy the equation P(x) = 0, where P(x) is a polynomial with real or complex coefficients. Since the complex number system includes all real numbers, it provides a complete framework for analyzing all possible roots of a polynomial.Every polynomial of degree n≥1 can be...

Real Zeros of Polynomials

Polynomials are algebraic expressions of terms with variables raised to non-negative integer powers. A central aspect of analyzing polynomial functions is determining their real zeros—values of the variable for which the polynomial evaluates to zero. These values represent the x-intercepts of the polynomial’s graph. The Rational Zeros Theorem lists possible rational solutions for a polynomial equation with integer coefficients. If f(x)=anxn+....+a0, then every rational zero is of the form p/q,...

Here, we present successful maintenance and venom extraction protocols for large-scale Tityus serrulatus Lutz and Mello, 1922 (Brazilian yellow scorpion) husbandry, with the aim of providing venom for subsequent scorpion antivenom production to meet the demand of the Brazilian health system.

Uncertainty in Measurement: Significant Figures

2020

All the digits in a measurement, including the uncertain last digit, are called significant figures or significant digits. Note that zero may be a measured value; for example, if a scale that shows weight to the nearest pound reads “140,” then the 1 (hundreds), 4 (tens), and 0 (ones) are all significant (measured) values. A measurement result is properly reported when its significant digits accurately represent the certainty of the measurement process. Below are a set of rules to determine the...

Here, we present protocols for 1) the laboratory captive propagation of the federally endangered Miami blue butterfly (Cyclargus thomasi bethunebakeri), and 2) assessing basic life history information such as immature development time and number of larval stadia. Both methods can be adapted for use with other ex situ conservation programs.
