Carbon Chain

Carbon chains are sequences of covalently bonded carbon atoms that form the structural backbone of many organic compounds, making them central to understanding molecular diversity in chemistry. Through carbon’s ability to form strong carbon-carbon bonds, a process called catenation, chains can be straight, branched, or arranged with single, double, or triple bonds; these bonding patterns influence molecular shape and reactivity. Comparing chain length, branching, and degree of unsaturation helps explain differences in physical and chemical properties. Carbon-chain analysis supports the classification and naming of hydrocarbons and informs the study of fuels, polymers, pharmaceuticals, and biological molecules.

Electron Transport Chains

2019

The final stage of cellular respiration is oxidative phosphorylation that consists of two steps: the electron transport chain and chemiosmosis. The electron transport chain is a set of proteins found in the inner mitochondrial membrane in eukaryotic cells. Its primary function is to establish a proton gradient that can be used during chemiosmosis to produce ATP and generate electron carriers, such as NAD+ and FAD, that are used in glycolysis and the citric acid cycle. The ETC is comprised of...

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...

Long and hollow glassy carbon microfibers were fabricated based on the pyrolysis of a natural product, human hair. The two fabrication steps of carbon microelectromechanical and carbon nanoelectromechanical systems, or C-MEMS and C-NEMS, are: (i) photolithography of a carbon-rich polymer precursor and (ii) pyrolysis of the patterned polymer precursor.

Supply Chain and Supply Chain Management

Individuals, organizations, resources, activities, and technology are all involved in creating and selling a product. The process typically begins with sourcing raw materials from suppliers, progresses through manufacturing to produce finished goods, continues with warehousing, and culminates in distribution to consumers. Supply Chain Management, or SCM oversees the seamless flow of goods, information, and finances across these stages, aiming to optimize costs, manage inventory levels...
