Catalyst Synthesis

Catalyst synthesis is the design and preparation of substances that accelerate chemical reactions without being consumed, enabling control over reaction rate, selectivity, and efficiency. It typically involves forming an active material, such as a metal, metal oxide, or molecular complex, while controlling its composition, particle size, dispersion, surface area, and support; drying, calcination, or reduction can then establish active sites and oxidation states. In chemistry, these steps determine how catalysts interact with reactants and influence product formation. Reproducible synthesis supports industrial processes, energy conversion, environmental remediation, and the development of catalysts with improved performance and lower material or energy demands.

2016

The conversion of trans-ferulic acid to vanillin was achieved by heterogeneous catalysis. HKUST-1 was employed in this synthesis and the essential step in the catalytic process was the generation of unsaturated metal sites. Thus, when the catalyst was activated under vacuum, full vanillin conversion (yield of 95%) was obtained.

Synthesis and Testing of Supported Pt-Cu Solid Solution Nanoparticle Catalysts for Propane Dehydrogenation
