External Voltage

External voltage is an electrical potential difference supplied by a source outside a chemical system, and it can control how charge moves and reactions proceed. When applied across electrodes, it creates an electric field that drives electrons through an external circuit and promotes ion migration within an electrolyte, shifting the balance of oxidation and reduction at each electrode. In chemistry, external voltage enables electrolysis, electrodeposition, and electroanalytical measurements, while also influencing battery charging and electrochemical synthesis. Understanding its magnitude, polarity, and relationship to electrode potentials helps predict reaction direction, energy requirements, and product formation.

Externalities are unintended side effects of economic activities that impact third parties who are not directly involved in the market transaction. They can have positive or negative effects that can influence society and the environment in various ways. Positive Externalities Positive externalities occur when a market activity produces benefits for others without those beneficiaries having to pay for it. Examples include: Education: When individuals receive an education, society benefits...

Voltage

The movement of electrons in a conductor requires some form of energy or work, usually provided by an external force, like a battery. This force is called the electromotive force or voltage. The voltage between two points, referred to as points "a" and "b," in an electric circuit is the energy (or work) needed to move a unit charge from point "a" to point "b," and this relationship is expressed mathematically as In this equation, "w" represents the energy measured in joules (J), and "q"...

Work Done on a System by External Force

The work done by an external force on a particle changes its kinetic energy. However, internal forces must also be considered for a system of interacting particles. The potential energy formulation helps formulate the effect of internal forces. The net work done by an external force can be written in terms of the total change of mechanical energy, which includes both kinetic and potential energies. In the presence of a non-conservative opposing force, like friction, some part of the work done...

Single Cell Measurement of Dopamine Release with Simultaneous Voltage-clamp and Amperometry

2012

The amperometric technique measures dopamine release from a single cell by detecting the oxidative current produced by spontaneous dopamine oxidization. Simultaneous voltage clamp and amperometry methodology reveal the mechanistic relationship between the overall "activity" of dopamine transporter and the regulatory role of this activity on the reverse transport of dopamine.

Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT The pelvic exam can feel invasive to patients, so it is important to do everything possible to make patients feel comfortable and empowered, rather than vulnerable. Clinicians should be aware of how they are communicating, both verbally and nonverbally, and should give their patients...
