Ferrocene Analysis

Ferrocene analysis is the chemical characterization of ferrocene and its derivatives to determine molecular structure, identity, purity, and reactivity. Because ferrocene contains an iron atom positioned between two parallel cyclopentadienyl rings, analysts can combine spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and chromatography with electrochemical measurements; cyclic voltammetry commonly monitors its reversible one-electron oxidation from iron(II) to iron(III). These measurements reveal bonding, composition, thermal or chemical stability, and redox behavior. In chemistry research, ferrocene analysis supports organometallic synthesis, reaction monitoring, quality control, and the development of ferrocene-based catalysts, sensors, and materials.

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University In 1951, Kealy and Pauson reported to Nature the synthesis of a new organometallic compound, ferrocene.1 In their original report, Pauson suggested a structure for ferrocene in which the iron is singly bonded (sigma bonds) to one carbon atom of each cyclopentadiene ligand (Figure 1, Structure I).1,2,3 This initial report led to wide-spread interest in the structure of ferrocene, and many leading scientists participated...

Purification of Ferrocene by Sublimation

2023

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Sublimation, the direct phase transition of a solid into a gas without first becoming a liquid, takes place at temperatures and pressures lower than that of the compound's triple point (Figure 1).The process of sublimation can be utilized to purify both organic and inorganic solids. During the purification technique, a solid is heated directly into the gas-phase. All non-volatile impurities are left behind while the...

The synthesis of asymmetric species of ferrocene is challenging using solution techniques. This report focuses on the methods carried out to produce a ferrocene-biotin bioconjugate using facile and clean reactions accomplished via solid-phase synthesis. Incorporation of a thiolate moiety is shown to impart the ability for immobilization on gold surfaces.

Salmonella invades and replicates inside intestinal epithelial cells both in Salmonella-specific vacuoles and free in the cytosol (hyper-replication). A high-throughput fluorescence microscopy-based protocol is described here to quantify the intracellular phenotypes of Salmonella by two complementary image analyses through ImageJ, reaching single-cell resolution and scoring.
