Micelle Formation

Micelle formation is the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules into organized aggregates in a liquid, a process that matters because it enables water to solubilize otherwise poorly soluble substances. When surfactant concentration exceeds the critical micelle concentration, hydrophobic tails cluster away from water while hydrophilic head groups remain exposed, producing structures that can be spherical or take other forms depending on molecular geometry, solvent, temperature, and ionic strength. In chemistry, micelles help explain detergency, emulsification, and colloidal stability. They also provide adaptable environments for catalysis, separation methods, and the delivery of hydrophobic compounds in pharmaceutical and materials research.

Micelle formation is an intricate process that hinges on the properties of amphiphilic or amphipathic molecules and the conditions of the system in which they are found. Amphiphilic molecules, which have both hydrophilic (water-attracting) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) parts, play a critical role in this process. In aqueous environments, these molecules arrange themselves such that their hydrophilic heads are turned towards the water phase, while their hydrophobic tails are oriented away...

The key steps of living anionic polymerization of phenyl glycidyl ether (PheGE) on methoxy-polyethylene glycol (mPEG-b-PPheGE) are described. The resulting block copolymer micelles (BCMs) were loaded with doxorubicin 14% (wt%) and sustained release of drug over 4 days under physiologically relevant conditions was obtained.
