Monodisperse Nanoparticles

Monodisperse nanoparticles are nanoscale particles with nearly uniform size and shape, a level of consistency that makes their chemical and physical behavior easier to measure and control. In chemistry, researchers obtain this uniformity by regulating precursor concentration, temperature, reaction time, and the separation of nucleation from particle growth; stabilizing ligands or surfactants can limit aggregation and guide particle formation. Because surface area, optical response, reactivity, and dispersibility depend strongly on particle dimensions, monodisperse nanoparticles provide reproducible materials for catalysis, chemical sensing, imaging, and targeted delivery, while enabling clearer relationships between structure and function.

Here, we demonstrate a simple production method for size-controllable, monodisperse, water-in-oil (W/O) microdroplets using a capillary-based centrifugal microfluidic device. This method requires only a small sample volume and enables high-yield production. We expect this method will be useful for rapid biochemical and cellular analyses.

Crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) displays the unique ability to fabricate cylindrical nanostructures of narrow length distributions. The organocatalyzed ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and subsequent chain extensions of methyl methacrylate and N,N-dimethyl acrylamide are demonstrated. A living CDSA protocol that produces monodisperse cylinders up to 500 nm in length is outlined.
