Monomer Reactivity

Monomer reactivity describes how readily a monomer participates in a chemical reaction, particularly the chain-growth or step-growth reactions that form polymers. In polymerization, reactivity depends on molecular structure, functional groups, steric effects, electronic properties, temperature, solvent, catalyst, and the stability of reactive intermediates such as radicals, ions, or active coordination complexes. Comparing monomer reactivity helps chemists predict reaction rates, copolymer composition, sequence distribution, and molecular-weight development. These relationships guide the design and processing of plastics, elastomers, coatings, adhesives, and specialty polymers with controlled mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties.

Lipid polyesters constitute the structural components of two cell wall modifications, the plant cuticle and suberin-containing diffusion barriers. In this video, we describe a method to depolymerize cutin from whole delipidated leaves. The method can be applied to investigating mutants compromised in either cutin or suberin biosynthesis.

Detecting Reactive Oxygen Species

2023

Reactive oxygen species are chemically active, oxygen-derived molecules capable of oxidizing other molecules. Because of their reactive nature, there are many deleterious effects associated with unchecked ROS production, including structural damage to DNA and other biological molecules. However, ROS can also be mediators of physiological signaling. There is accumulating evidence that ROS play significant roles in everything from activation of transcription factors to the mediation of...

We report protocols for “polymerizing” various types of polymer-encapsulated metal nanoparticles into long chains of “homo-“ and “co-polymers”.

Reactivity of Enols

2023

Enols are a class of compounds where a hydroxyl group is attached to a carbon–carbon double bond, which implies that it is a vinyl alcohol. A carbonyl compound with an α hydrogen undergoes keto–enol tautomerism and remains in equilibrium with its tautomer, the enol form. Usually, the keto tautomer is present in a higher concentration than the enol tautomer due to the higher bond energy of C=O compared to C=C. Moreover, the direction of the keto–enol equilibrium is governed by factors like...

Cross-reactivity

2025

Overview The ability of a single antibody to recognize multiple structurally similar epitopes is an important immune defense strategy that enables the host to efficiently defend against many potentially threatening pathogens. However, cross-reactivity also elicits allergy symptoms against related allergens. It is increasingly important to understand the principles of cross-reactivity, as antibodies are actively being developed as therapeutic modalities for diverse diseases, including cancer.
