M/z Detection

M/z detection is the measurement of an ion’s mass-to-charge ratio, a fundamental principle that enables mass spectrometers to distinguish and identify chemical species. In a mass spectrometer, molecules are ionized, and the resulting ions are separated according to m/z by their motion through electric or magnetic fields or by their flight time before reaching a detector. The resulting mass spectrum records signal intensity across m/z values, supporting molecular identification, structural analysis, isotope-pattern interpretation, and quantitative measurements. In chemistry, m/z detection is central to identifying unknown compounds, characterizing reaction products, and analyzing complex samples in fields such as proteomics, metabolomics, and environmental research.
