Surface Wettability

Surface wettability describes how readily a liquid spreads across or beads up on a solid, revealing interactions between the liquid and surface. It depends on the balance among liquid cohesion, liquid–surface adhesion, surface energy, and roughness, and is commonly assessed by measuring the contact angle of a droplet. In chemistry, wettability influences coating uniformity, adsorption, catalysis, separation processes, and the performance of membranes, sensors, and biomedical materials. Controlling wettability through surface modification or changes in composition can improve fluid transport, bonding, cleaning, and resistance to contamination.

Surface Tension and Surface Energy

2023

When a paint brush is immersed in water, the bristles wave freely inside the water. When it is taken out, the bristles stick together. The reason behind this effect is surface tension. Consider a beaker filled with liquid. The bulk molecules in the liquid experience equal attractive forces on all sides with the surrounding molecules. However, the surface molecules experience a net attractive force downward due to the bulk molecules. The surface of the liquid behaves like a stretched membrane,...

Light-induced Patterning and Grafting for Slippery Surfaces based on Silane-coated Nanoporous Structures

2025

This protocol presents a light-induced method for fabricating slippery three-dimensional structures via sequential digital patterning and grafting on silane-coated nanoporous surfaces. This approach enables the spatially controlled formation of slippery regions, enabling patterned liquid repellency and the quantitative analysis of interfacial slipperiness, with applications in fluid manipulation and surface engineering.

Here we report the synthesis and characterization of ordered nanoporous carbon (with a 4.6 nm pore size) and SBA-15 (with a 5.3 nm pore size). The work describes the surface and textural properties of nanoporous molecular sieves, their wettability, and the melting behavior of D2O confined in the materials.
