Confidentiality

Confidentiality is the ethical and legal duty to protect personal information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure, making it central to safe and trustworthy clinical care. In practice, healthcare professionals limit information sharing to authorized individuals and appropriate purposes, using informed consent, secure records, access controls, and de-identification when possible. Clinical confidentiality supports honest communication between patients and care teams, strengthens therapeutic relationships, and helps protect people from stigma or harm. It also guides the handling of medical records, case discussions, and clinical research data, while requiring careful judgment when disclosure is permitted or necessary to protect a patient or others.
