Intra-articular Injection

Intra-articular injection is a clinical procedure that delivers medication or another therapeutic fluid directly into a synovial joint, enabling targeted assessment or treatment of joint pain and inflammation. During the procedure, a clinician identifies the joint space, prepares the skin using aseptic technique, and advances a needle into the cavity, sometimes with ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance; the injected agent then acts locally, with corticosteroids suppressing inflammation, anesthetics reducing pain, or other formulations supporting joint function. Used in conditions such as osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis, the technique can provide symptom relief, guide diagnosis, and reduce systemic drug exposure, while requiring attention to infection, bleeding, and accurate placement.

Intra-articular Shoulder Injection for Reduction Following Shoulder Dislocation

2023

Source: Rachel Liu, BAO, MBBCh, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA The anterior shoulder dislocation is one of the most common joint dislocations seen in emergency settings. In anterior shoulder dislocation, the humeral head is displaced out of the glenohumeral joint in front of the scapular glenoid, resulting in a loss of the articulation between the arm and the rest of the shoulder. This can be caused by a fall onto an abducted, extended, and externally...

2024

Dunkin-Hartley guinea pigs are an established animal model for osteoarthritis research. Such studies may benefit from intra-articular injections for various reasons, including investigating novel agents or treating disease. We describe a methodology for intra-articular knee injections in Guinea pigs and subsequent micro-computed tomography analysis assessing arthritis-associated knee changes.

Lymph nodes are the immunological tissues that orchestrate immune response and are a critical target for vaccines. Biomaterials have been employed to better target lymph nodes and to control delivery of antigens or adjuvants. This paper describes a technique combining these ideas to inject biocompatible polymer particles into lymph nodes.

Intra-uterine Cancer Cell Injection: A Technique to Deliver Cancer Cells for Establishing Intra-peritoneal Ovarian Cancer Mouse Model
