Lipid-based Formulations

Lipid-based formulations are drug delivery systems that use oils, lipids, surfactants, or related excipients to improve the administration and absorption of medicines, particularly poorly water-soluble compounds. After oral dosing, gastrointestinal fluids and bile salts disperse the formulation and promote digestion, forming colloidal structures such as micelles that keep the drug solubilized and available for uptake; some systems may also support lymphatic transport. In clinical research and pharmaceutical development, these formulations can increase bioavailability, reduce absorption variability, and enable effective dosing of challenging active ingredients. Their composition and digestion behavior guide the design of medicines for oral, parenteral, and other therapeutic applications.
