Methanol Cryoprotectant

Methanol cryoprotectant is a chemical additive used to protect cells, gametes, embryos, or tissues from freezing damage, making it relevant to sample preservation in developmental biology. Because methanol can penetrate cells and lower the freezing point of intracellular and extracellular solutions, it reduces ice-crystal formation during controlled cooling, although its concentration and exposure time must be carefully optimized because methanol is cytotoxic. In developmental research, methanol-based cryoprotection can support the storage and recovery of biological specimens for later culture, molecular analysis, staining, or imaging. Its effectiveness depends on cell type, developmental stage, cooling rate, and warming conditions.
