Photoreceptor Ablation

Photoreceptor ablation is the targeted removal or destruction of light-sensitive retinal cells, a method used to examine how neural tissues develop, adapt, and regenerate. Researchers induce ablation through genetic, chemical, or light-based approaches that selectively damage rods, cones, or both while preserving surrounding retinal structures as much as possible. In developmental biology, subsequent changes in cell survival, proliferation, migration, differentiation, and neural circuitry reveal how photoreceptors influence retinal organization and how neighboring cells respond to injury. These experiments also provide models for studying retinal degeneration, regenerative capacity, and potential strategies for restoring visual function.

Photoreceptors and Plant Responses to Light

2020

Light plays a significant role in regulating the growth and development of plants. In addition to providing energy for photosynthesis, light provides other important cues to regulate a range of developmental and physiological responses in plants. What Is a Photoreceptor? Plants respond to light using a unique set of light-sensitive proteins called photoreceptors. Photoreceptors contain photopigments, which consist of a protein component bound to a non-protein, light-absorbing pigment called...

This protocol shows how to consistently excise planarian eyes (optic cups) without disturbing surrounding tissues. Using an insulin needle and syringe, either one or both eyes can be ablated to facilitate investigations into the mechanisms regulating eye regeneration, the evolution of visual regeneration, and the neural basis of light-induced behavior.
