Cell Type Detection

Cell type detection is the identification and classification of cells based on distinguishing features such as morphology, surface markers, and gene expression, making it essential for analyzing complex biological systems. Depending on the sample and research goal, engineers use microscopy, fluorescent antibody labeling with flow cytometry, or molecular assays to measure these features and assign cells to defined types. In tissue engineering and biomanufacturing, accurate detection verifies the identity, purity, and distribution of cells in engineered tissues, organoids, and cell-based products. It also supports quality control, disease modeling, and the development of reliable regenerative medicine technologies.

Types of Errors: Detection and Minimization

2024

Error is the deviation of the obtained result from the true, expected value or the estimated central value. Errors are expressed in absolute or relative terms. Absolute error in a measurement is the numerical difference from the true or central value. Relative error is the ratio between absolute error and the true or central value, expressed as a percentage. Errors can be classified by source, magnitude, and sign. There are three types of errors: systematic, random, and gross. Systematic or...

Two Types of Assays for Detecting Frog Sperm Chemoattraction

Cited by 5 •

2011

Eggs and the extracellular coatings around eggs frequently release peptides, proteins and small molecules that communicate with sperm to guide them to the egg thereby promoting fertilization. Using frog sperm we describe and compare two classes of assays used to detect sperm chemoattraction – sperm accumulation assays and sperm tracking assays.

Wild-Type Blocking PCR to Detect Low-Frequency Somatic Mutations

2025

This video describes wild-type blocking polymerase chain reaction, or WTB-PCR, which detects somatic mutations. The PCR-based technique uses a locked nucleic acid, or LNA, an oligonucleotide that binds to its complementary wild-type allele and blocks its elongation. The blocking selectively allows the amplification of low-level mutant alleles over their wild-type variants in the sample.

Heat-Induced Antigen Retrieval: An Effective Method to Detect and Identify Progenitor Cell Types during Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis

2013

During adult hippocampal neurogenesis, a distinct set of genetic markers are expressed when a quiescent neural stem cell sequentially progresses and develops into a functionally integrated neuron in the circuit. Using heat-induced antigen retrieval, progenitor cell types that are otherwise difficult to detect are identified with improved effectiveness.
