Porcine Skin Processing

Porcine skin processing is the controlled preparation of pig skin for use in biomedical engineering, biomaterials research, and tissue models. Processing typically involves cleaning and trimming the tissue, followed by chemical or enzymatic treatments that remove cellular components while preserving the collagen-rich extracellular matrix; additional steps can adjust thickness, sterility, and mechanical properties. The resulting material may serve as a skin-like scaffold for wound-healing studies, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and surgical research. Because porcine skin shares important structural and functional features with human skin, standardized processing helps produce reproducible models for evaluating biomaterial performance and biological responses.

This protocol uses multi-view stereo to generate three-dimensional (3D) models out of uncalibrated sequences of photographs, making it affordable and adjustable to a surgical setting. Strain maps between the 3D models are quantified with spline-based isogeometric kinematics, which facilitate representation of smooth surfaces over coarse meshes sharing the same parameterization.
