Sulfonated Melamine

Sulfonated melamine is a melamine-derived compound in which sulfonic acid groups are introduced onto the nitrogen-rich triazine framework, giving the material strong polarity and water compatibility. In engineering formulations, these anionic groups interact with positively charged or hydrated surfaces, while the melamine framework contributes chemical stability and a platform for further condensation or network formation. Sulfonated melamine compounds are used in cement admixtures, where adsorption onto cement particles promotes electrostatic dispersion, improves flow, and can reduce the water required for workable concrete. Their tunable structure also supports research into functional polymers, coatings, and other materials requiring controlled solubility and interfacial behavior.

Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution: Sulfonation of Benzene

2023

Sulfonation of benzene is a reaction wherein benzene is treated with fuming sulfuric acid at room temperature to produce benzenesulfonic acid. Fuming sulfuric acid is a mixture of sulfur trioxide and concentrated sulfuric acid. The active electrophile is either neutral sulfur trioxide or protonated sulfur trioxide ion, depending on the reaction conditions. One of the mechanisms involves neutral sulfur trioxide acting as an electrophile, which reacts with the π electron cloud of nucleophilic...

In this video, we describe a colorimetric-based method to determine non-heme iron content in mouse liver tissue. Bathophenanthroline sulfonate is used as the chromogenic substrate in the presence of a reducing agent, which converts ferric iron to chelatable ferrous iron.

DNA Methylation Analysis

Methylation at CpG dinucleotides is a chemical modification of DNA hypothesized to play important roles in regulating gene expression. In particular, the methylation of clusters of methylation sites, called “CpG islands”, near promoters and other gene regulatory elements may contribute to the stable silencing of genes, for example, during epigenetic processes such as genomic imprinting and X-chromosome inactivation. At the same time, aberrant CpG methylation has been shown to be associated with...
