Surface Hardness Measurement

Surface hardness measurement is the engineering assessment of a material’s resistance to localized plastic deformation, wear, or scratching at or near its surface. In common indentation tests, a controlled force presses a diamond or hardened ball into the specimen, and the resulting indentation size or depth is converted into a hardness value; scratch and rebound methods use different responses to applied loading. These measurements help compare heat-treated metals, coatings, ceramics, and polymers, verify surface treatments, and predict resistance to service damage. Because results depend on load, indenter geometry, surface finish, and material condition, standardized procedures are essential for reliable quality control and materials research.

Rockwell Hardness Test and the Effect of Treatment on Steel

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Hardness testing is one of the most universally valuable mechanical tests available to engineers, as it is both simple and relatively inexpensive for the wealth of information and data it produces. Hardness testing, generally in the form of a surface penetration test, is both quicker and less destructive than tensile testing. Hardness provides a linear relationship with tensile strength over a...

Toughness and Hardness of Aggregate

2024

Toughness and hardness are critical properties of aggregate materials used in concrete, particularly on pavement surfaces and industrial flooring subjected to heavy loads. Toughness is defined as the aggregate's resistance to failure by impact and is measured by the aggregate impact value (AIV). For this, the aggregate impact value test is performed, wherein the impact is delivered by a standard hammer, which falls freely under its own weight onto the aggregates. The aggregates fragment in the...

We describe a method of measuring binding energy, expressible as tissue surface tension, between cells within 3D tissue-like aggregates. Differences in tissue surface tension have been demonstrated to correlate with invasiveness of lung, muscle, and brain tumors, and are fundamental determinants of establishing spatial relationships between different cell types.

The Measurement of Unsteady Surface Pressure Using a Remote Microphone Probe

Here, we present a protocol to measure, with high spatial resolution, the unsteady surface pressure in turbulent flows. This method demonstrates the construction of a remote microphone probe (RMP) and the determination of its frequency-dependent, complex transfer function. An analytical determination of the dynamic response is presented and validated.
