Volumetric Ultrasound Data

Volumetric ultrasound data are three-dimensional measurements of acoustic echoes collected throughout a tissue, object, or other scanned volume, enabling spatial analysis beyond a single two-dimensional image. An ultrasound transducer transmits high-frequency sound pulses, records returning echoes from material interfaces, and combines measurements acquired across multiple viewing angles or positions into a voxel-based volume; repeated acquisition can also represent motion over time. In engineering, these data support nondestructive evaluation, geometric inspection, structural characterization, and visualization of internal features without cutting or damaging a component. Processing methods such as segmentation and volume rendering help quantify defects and guide design, manufacturing, and quality-control decisions.

In the pathogenesis of bone metastasis, angiogenesis is a crucial process and therefore represents a target for imaging and therapy. Here, we present a rat model of site-specific breast cancer bone metastasis and describe strategies to non-invasively image angiogenesis in vivo using magnetic resonance imaging, volumetric computed tomography and ultrasound.

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

Source: Amelia R. Adelsperger, Evan H. Phillips, and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana High-frequency ultrasound systems are used to acquire high resolution images. Here, the use of a state-of-the-art system will be demonstrated to image the morphology and hemodynamics of small pulsatile arteries and veins found in mice and rats. Ultrasound is a relatively inexpensive, portable, and versatile method for the noninvasive...

This video demonstrates use of a rail-mounted high-frequency ultrasound probe to perform echocardiography on an anesthetized mouse. The methods describe both conventional two-dimensional and M-mode measurements of cardiac function in addition to newer, more powerful tools such as color Doppler, strain analysis, as well as general and targeted contrast imaging.
