Airtight Chamber Design

Airtight chamber design is the engineering of enclosed spaces that limit unintended gas, vapor, or particle exchange with the surrounding environment, enabling controlled measurements and experiments. It relies on continuous barriers, sealed joints, compatible gaskets, and carefully managed ports to reduce leakage, while pressure control and leak testing help verify chamber performance. In environmental research, airtight chambers support soil respiration studies, gas flux measurements, contaminant containment, and controlled exposure experiments by maintaining defined internal conditions. Effective designs improve measurement accuracy, reduce cross-contamination, and provide reproducible data for assessing ecosystem processes, air quality, and environmental transport.

2026

A design is presented to enable cost-effective low-temperature battery cycling for 2032 coin cells in a low-humidity environment. Cells are cycled at 0 °C inside a chamber cooled by thermoelectric modules. This simple design can be adapted for experiments that require similar thermal and humidity-controlled environments or different battery geometries.

We present a method to apply a physiological electric field to migrating, immortalized prostate cells in a custom-made galvanotaxis chamber. Using this method, we demonstrate that 2 lines of non-tumorigenic prostate cells demonstrate different degrees of migration directionality in the field.

Group Design

2020

The most basic experimental design involves two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The two groups are designed to be the same except for one difference— experimental manipulation. The experimental group gets the experimental manipulation—that is, the treatment or variable being tested—and the control group does not. Since experimental manipulation is the only difference between the experimental and control groups, we can be sure that any differences between the two are due to...

Chambers of the Heart

2025

The human heart is a complex organ made up of four chambers: the right and left atria and the right and left ventricles. These internal chambers are separated by partitions known as the interatrial and interventricular septa. The exterior of the heart features a groove known as the coronary sulcus that demarcates the atria from the ventricles, while the anterior and posterior interventricular sulci distinguish between the two ventricles. Deoxygenated blood from the body is received in the right...
