Moss Lichen Analysis

Moss lichen analysis is an environmental assessment approach that uses mosses and lichens to reveal patterns of air quality, atmospheric deposition, and ecosystem health. Because these organisms absorb water and nutrients directly from the atmosphere and can retain airborne particles and trace metals, researchers analyze their tissue chemistry, abundance, and distribution across sampling sites. Comparing results with reference locations can identify pollution sources, map contaminant deposition, and track ecological change over time. This biomonitoring method complements instrumental measurements by providing spatially integrated evidence of environmental conditions and can support pollution management, habitat assessment, and long-term monitoring programs.
