Antibiotic Treated Mice

Antibiotic-treated mice are laboratory animals given antimicrobial drugs to reduce or alter their resident microbiota, providing a model for studying how microorganisms influence health and disease. Antibiotics disrupt the composition and activity of the gut microbial community, which can change colonization resistance, microbial metabolites, and signals received by immune cells. In immunology and infection research, these mice help investigators examine pathogen establishment, host immune responses, microbiota-dependent inflammation, and the effects of restoring defined bacterial communities. Results from this model can clarify interactions among antibiotics, commensal microbes, and immune defenses while informing studies of infection susceptibility and microbiome-based interventions.

(2025)The video demonstrates the isolation of kidneys containing Staphylococcus aureus-infected macrophages, followed by tissue homogenization to release intracellular bacteria. It quantifies bacterial persistence within macrophages in control and antibiotic-treated groups by counting colony-forming units.
