Cascade Impactor

A cascade impactor is an aerosol-sampling instrument that separates airborne particles by aerodynamic diameter, enabling researchers to measure particle-size distributions and predict where particles may deposit in the respiratory tract. As an aerosol passes through a series of stages with progressively smaller nozzles, airflow accelerates and particles with sufficient inertia impact collection surfaces, while smaller particles remain suspended and move to later stages. In immunology and infection research, cascade impactors characterize infectious bioaerosols, inhaled therapeutics, and respiratory particles, supporting studies of transmission, exposure, dose, and airway deposition. These measurements help evaluate aerosol-generating procedures and improve the design of inhalation-based interventions.

Generating a Mouse Model of Traumatic Brain Injury Using an Impactor Device

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for inducing traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a mouse model. An anesthetized mouse with an exposed skull is taken to create an opening in the skull, and then a controlled cortical injury is induced using an impact device. The injury damages the brain tissue, causing impaired cognitive function and motor coordination.

Generating a Traumatic Brain Injury Mouse Model Using an Impactor Probe

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for inducing an open-skull traumatic brain injury in a mouse by making a midline skull incision, drilling through the skull and removing the bone flap to expose the brain cortex, and applying high pressure to induce trauma. The wound is then sutured to prepare the mouse model for subsequent experiments.

A Contusive Model of Unilateral Cervical Spinal Cord Injury Using the Infinite Horizon Impactor

A reliable and repeatable way to produce a cervical unilateral spinal cord injury using the Infinite Horizon impactor is described. The method takes advantage of a custom designed frame and clamp to stabilize the spine. The standardized procedure and biomechanical injury parameters result in sufficient and sustained injuries.

Rab Cascades

2023

Rab GTPases act in a regulated cascade during membrane fusion, helping the lipid bilayers mix. The Rab family of proteins are active when bound to GTP, and inactive when bound to GDP. Hence, they act as guanine nucleotide-dependent molecular switches. Rab-GTP recognizes and binds to long or short-range tethering proteins to capture the target vesicle. These tethers coordinate with SNAREs on the vesicle and the target membrane to assemble the trans SNARE complex that locks the mixing bilayers.

Intracellular Signaling Cascades

Once a ligand binds to a receptor, the signal is transmitted through the membrane and into the cytoplasm. The continuation of a signal in this manner is called signal transduction. Signal transduction only occurs with cell-surface receptors, which cannot interact with most components of the cell, such as DNA. Only internal receptors can interact directly with DNA in the nucleus to initiate protein synthesis. When a ligand binds to its receptor, conformational changes occur that affect the...
