Nmr Metabolomics

NMR metabolomics is the systematic measurement of small-molecule metabolites using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, providing a non-destructive view of biochemical states in cells, tissues, or biofluids. In a strong magnetic field, metabolite nuclei such as hydrogen absorb radiofrequency energy and produce signals whose chemical shifts and intensities reflect molecular structure and concentration; spectral patterns can then be assigned and compared across samples. In immunology and infection research, NMR metabolomics helps characterize host metabolic changes during immune activation, distinguish infection-associated profiles, and examine pathogen-host interactions. These data support biomarker discovery, mechanism-focused studies, and evaluation of treatment responses.

2012

A method for metabolite extraction from microbial planktonic communities is presented. Whole community sampling is achieved by filtration onto specially prepared filters. After lyophilization, aqueous-soluble metabolites are extracted. This approach allows for application of environmental metabolomics to trans-omics investigations of natural or experimental microbial communities.
