Arterial Waveform Analysis

Arterial waveform analysis is the interpretation of pressure changes recorded within an artery to assess cardiovascular function and hemodynamic status. An arterial catheter and pressure transducer convert pulsatile blood pressure into a waveform, whose shape and features reflect ventricular ejection, arterial compliance, vascular resistance, and valve closure; clinicians can evaluate systolic and diastolic pressure, mean arterial pressure, pulse pressure, and waveform abnormalities. In medicine, this analysis supports continuous monitoring during critical care, anesthesia, and surgery, while helping identify changes in circulation, detect damping or measurement artifacts, and guide treatment of patients with unstable blood pressure.

Effective Value of a Periodic Waveform

2024

The concept of effective value, the root mean square (RMS) value, is crucial in understanding electrical circuits and power delivery. This idea emerges from the necessity to measure the effectiveness of a voltage or current source in supplying power to a resistive load. The effective value of a periodic current represents the direct current (DC) that conveys the same average power to a resistor as the periodic current itself. This concept is crucial when assessing AC circuits. To determine the...

2025

Assessment of internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis is based on the estimation of percentage stenosis, which does not account for physiologically relevant risk factors for stroke such as plaque composition and hemodynamics. This protocol leverages quantitative magnetic resonance imaging and computational fluid dynamics to characterize ICA plaque composition and hemodynamics.

2022

This article describes the semi-automated measurement of the amplitudes and latencies of the first five peaks and troughs in the auditory brainstem response waveform. An additional routine compiles and annotates the data into a spreadsheet for experimenter analysis. These free computer routines are executed using the open-source statistical package R.

Measurement of Pulmonary Artery Pressure in Rats Using Right Heart Catheterization
