Bone Augmentation

Bone augmentation is a group of medical procedures that increases the volume or strength of deficient bone to restore structural support and function. Treatment may use autologous bone, donor grafts, synthetic biomaterials, or scaffolds that provide a framework for new bone formation as cells migrate, attach, and remodel the grafted site. In medicine, bone augmentation helps reconstruct defects caused by trauma, disease, tooth loss, or surgical removal and may prepare the jaw for dental implants or support orthopedic reconstruction. Outcomes depend on graft integration, blood supply, mechanical stability, and the patient’s healing capacity.

Here we present a surgical protocol in rabbits with the aim to assess bone substitution materials in terms of bone regeneration capacities. By using PEEK cylinders fixed onto rabbit skulls, osteoconduction, osteoinduction, osteogenesis and vasculogenesis induced by the materials may be evaluated either on live or euthanized animals.
