Conductance Catheterization

Conductance catheterization is an invasive cardiovascular technique that measures intracardiac pressure and ventricular volume in real time, enabling assessment of cardiac function. A catheter with pressure sensors and multiple electrodes is positioned inside the ventricle; electrical conductance through blood estimates chamber volume, while pressure measurements generate pressure-volume loops. Calibration accounts for parallel conductance from surrounding tissues and helps improve volume estimates. In medicine and cardiovascular research, the technique quantifies stroke volume, contractility, ventricular compliance, and load-independent indices of performance. These measurements support studies of heart failure, cardiac remodeling, and the effects of drugs or interventions on ventricular function.

We describe a novel surgical method for catheterizing 'intestinal loops' within the ileum of sheep. Once animals have recovered from surgery and have cleared antibiotics and analgesics, multiple treatments can be deposited directly in loops via the catheters.

Right Heart Catheterization: An OverviewRight heart catheterization is an invasive diagnostic procedure that measures right-sided cardiac and pulmonary artery pressures, calculates cardiac output, and identifies intracardiac shunts. It provides detailed hemodynamic data essential for diagnosing and managing various cardiovascular conditions, such as pulmonary hypertension.Access SitesCommon access sites for right heart catheterization include the internal jugular vein in the neck region, the...

The use of domestic and miniature pigs in science has increased significantly in recent years. By demonstrating how to perform intubation, transurethral bladder catheterization, femoral artery and vein catheterization, as well as transcardial perfusion, we aim to further increase the value of Göttingen minipigs in biomedical research.
