Contouring Automation

Contouring automation is the use of computational tools to delineate organs, tumors, and other anatomical structures on medical images, particularly for radiation treatment planning. These systems analyze imaging data with methods such as atlas-based registration or artificial intelligence segmentation, assigning boundaries according to learned anatomical patterns and then presenting them for clinician review and correction. By reducing manual outlining time, contouring automation can improve workflow efficiency and promote greater consistency across treatment plans. Its applications include radiotherapy planning, dose assessment, treatment adaptation, and research, while expert oversight remains essential to verify accuracy and protect patients from errors.

Level Curves and Contour Maps

2026

Level curves and contour maps provide a way to visualize functions of two variables on a two-dimensional plane. A useful example is a topographic map, where curved lines represent locations that share the same elevation. In mathematics, these curves are called level curves or contour lines. Each contour line corresponds to points in the domain where the function has a constant value. For a function of two variables written as z = f(x,y), a level curve is defined by the equation f(x,y) = k,...

Topographic Surveying and Contours

2025

Topographic surveying is critical for documenting the Earth's surface, focusing on capturing elevations, slopes, and natural and man-made features. It is essential in construction planning, water resource management, and land-use analysis. The primary outcome of such surveys is a topographic map, which uses contour lines to visually represent the shape and slope of the terrain, providing valuable insights into the landscape's characteristics.Contour lines are fundamental to understanding the...

Design Example: Analyzing Capacity Contours for Flood Risk Assessment

2025

Flood risk assessment involves careful planning and analysis to ensure the safety of communities near water retention structures. Capacity contours are a vital tool in this process, as they illustrate the potential spread of water at specific levels in a given area. In the context of building a bund across a small valley, these contours play a critical role in evaluating the safety of nearby residential areas. In this example, the bund is intended to store stormwater in the valley. The engineers...

2016

Peptide adsorption to plasticware during traditional tip-based serial dilutions can significantly impact potency determination and confound the understanding of structure-activity relationships used for lead identification and lead optimization phases of drug discovery. Here methods for automated acoustic non-contact serial dilution of peptide samples are described.

Digital Microfluidics for Automated Proteomic Processing

Digital Microfluidics is a technique characterized by the manipulation of discrete droplets (~nL - mL) on an array of electrodes by the application of electrical fields. It is well-suited for carrying out rapid, sequential, miniaturized automated biochemical assays. Here, we report a platform capable of automating several proteomic processing steps.
