Endoscopic Lumbar Fusion

Endoscopic lumbar fusion is a minimally invasive spinal surgery that joins selected lumbar vertebrae to stabilize the spine and relieve symptoms caused by structural problems. Through a small portal, surgeons use an endoscope for visualization, remove the damaged intervertebral disc or other compressive tissue, and place an interbody implant with bone graft, often supplemented by fixation hardware to promote bone growth between vertebrae. The technique can reduce disruption to muscles and surrounding tissues compared with open procedures. In medicine, it supports treatment of conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spinal instability, and selected forms of lumbar stenosis, while advancing less invasive approaches to spinal reconstruction.

Source: Wang, L., et.al. Full-Endoscopic Isolation Zone Technique for the Treatment of Lumbar Disc Herniation. J. Vis. Exp.(2023)This video demonstrates a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure to treat lumbar disc herniation by removing the protruded nucleus pulposus and ruptured annulus fibrosus. The technique decompresses the affected nerve root, alleviates pain, and restores nerve function through targeted tissue resection and radiofrequency modulation.

2026

Here, we present a protocol to perform full-endoscopic trans-Kambin triangle lumbar interbody fusion (KLIF). The protocol utilizes a posterolateral approach via Kambin’s triangle for safe expandable cage insertion and neural decompression while preserving dorsal facet structure and minimizing soft tissue trauma.
