Equine Enteric Glia

Equine enteric glia are specialized support cells of the enteric nervous system that help regulate gastrointestinal nerve function and maintain intestinal homeostasis in horses. They interact closely with enteric neurons, epithelial cells, and immune components, providing structural and metabolic support while responding to signals associated with gut activity and tissue stress. Studying these cells can clarify how neural, epithelial, and immune pathways influence motility, barrier integrity, and inflammation in the equine intestine. This knowledge may improve understanding of gastrointestinal disorders linked to altered gut function and support more precise diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in veterinary medicine.

We demonstrate a cell culture protocol for the direct study of neuronal and glial components of the enteric nervous system. A neuron/glia mixed culture on coverslips is prepared from the myenteric plexus of adult mouse providing the ability to examine individual neuron and glia function by electrophysiology, immunohistochemical, etc.

Equine Enteric Glial Culture and Application to the Study of a Neural Inflammatory Mechanism in Equine Colic

Enteric glia are becoming increasingly recognized for their roles in intestinal homeostasis and disease processes, including postoperative complications. Equine patients recovering from emergency exploratory laparotomy suffer from a high risk of inflammatory postoperative conditions, highlighting the importance of establishing repeatable equine enteric glial primary cell culture for study.

This paper describes a method of abdominal wall closure using tension and apposition sutures in horses undergoing ventral midline laparotomies. It also describes methods for prevention and management of postoperative incisional complications, such as bandaging, negative pressure therapy, and in case of wound breakdown, the application of retention sutures.
