Heparin Perfusion Protocol

A heparin perfusion protocol is a standardized method for administering heparin by continuous infusion to reduce the risk of blood clot formation during medical treatment. Heparin enhances antithrombin activity, inhibiting thrombin and factor Xa and thereby limiting fibrin production and coagulation; clinicians adjust the infusion according to laboratory monitoring and treatment goals. In medicine, these protocols support anticoagulation for conditions and procedures in which thrombosis is a concern, while structured dosing and monitoring help balance clot prevention against bleeding risk. Understanding the protocol connects pharmacology, coagulation physiology, patient assessment, and safe clinical management.

Self-assembled polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) fabricated from heparin and protamine were deposited on alginate beads to entrap and regulate the release of osteogenic growth factors. This delivery strategy enables a 20-fold reduction of BMP-2 dose in spinal fusion applications. This article illustrates the benefits and fabrication of PECs.

The porcine model of liver normothermic machine perfusion (NMP), described here, can be successfully used to study NMP as a preservation strategy, a tool for viability assessment, and a platform for organ repair. It holds a high translational value, however it is technically challenging and labor-intensive.
