Hip-preserving Surgery

Hip-preserving surgery is a group of procedures designed to maintain the patient’s natural hip joint and delay or avoid total hip replacement. Depending on the underlying condition, surgeons may reshape abnormal bone, repair damaged cartilage or the labrum, realign the joint, or reduce pressure within the femoral head to improve movement and protect its blood supply. These techniques are used for conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement, hip dysplasia, labral injury, and early-stage osteonecrosis. By addressing structural damage before advanced arthritis develops, hip-preserving surgery can relieve pain, support function, and help selected patients retain their native joint.

Innovative Strategies for Organ Preservation in Heart Transplantation: Uniform Cooling Preservation and Ex-situ Normothermic Perfusion

2025

Donor heart preservation is a major determinant of success in heart transplantation. Technological advances have led to optimizing the conditions of preservation, along with a more accurate assessment of the donor heart before transplantation. We herein describe two innovative technologies currently applied for cardiac preservation: uniform cooling preservation and normothermic ex-situ heart perfusion.

Considerations for Rodent Surgery

2016

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals1 dictates that rodent survival surgery be performed aseptically. Aseptic technique utilizes specific practices that minimize the contamination of the surgical site, including patient preparation, surgeon preparation, sterilization of instruments and other supplies, and the use of a clean and controlled environment. Presurgical planning,...

Rodent Stereotaxic Surgery

2023

Stereotaxic (or stereotactic) surgery is a method used to manipulate the brain of living animals. This technique allows researchers to accurately target deep structures within the brain through the use of a stereotaxic atlas, which provides the 3D coordinates of each area with respect to anatomical landmarks on the skull. After the skull is exposed, anesthetized animals are mounted on a specialized instrument known as a stereotaxic frame, which enables the precise placement of experimental...

Laparoscopic Anatomic S7+S8d Resection Preserving Inferior Right Hepatic Vein and S6 with Right Hepatic Vein Transection

2025

We present a laparoscopic technique for anatomic S7+S8d resection with right hepatic vein transection, preserving the inferior right hepatic vein and segment S6. Relying on meticulous anatomical landmarks without intraoperative ultrasound, this approach offers a precise and parenchyma-sparing option for dorsally located right-liver tumors, particularly in settings with limited advanced navigation resources.

Robotic Duodenum-preserving Total Pancreatic Head Resection for Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasms

2026

This protocol presents robotic duodenum-preserving total pancreatic head resection (R-DPPHRt) for intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs). A video demonstrates the technique in a patient with main duct-IPMN, highlighting its feasibility as a minimally invasive, organ-preserving alternative to pancreaticoduodenectomy.
