Implant Fixation

Implant fixation is the process of securing a medical implant within the body so it remains stable, aligned, and functional under physiological loads. In orthopedics, fixation may rely on bone cement, press-fit insertion, screws, or biological integration, in which bone grows directly onto or into a textured implant surface. Appropriate fixation supports early function, maintains joint or skeletal reconstruction, and reduces micromotion that can contribute to loosening or failure. Its principles guide the design and placement of joint replacements, fracture-fixation devices, dental implants, and other medical hardware, while ongoing research seeks durable materials and improved bone-implant integration.

Two basic types of preparation are used to visualize specimens with a light microscope: wet mounts and fixed specimens. The simplest type of preparation is the wet mount, in which the specimen is placed in a drop of liquid on the slide. A liquid specimen can be directly deposited on the slide using a dropper. Solid specimens, such as skin scraping, can be placed on the slide before adding a drop of liquid to prepare the wet mount. Sometimes the liquid is simply water, but stains are often added...

A New Single Chamber Implantable Defibrillator with Atrial Sensing: A Practical Demonstration of Sensing and Ease of Implantation

Dual-chamber implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) may improve detection of atrial fibrillation as well as differentiation of tachycardias. However, this advantage is undermined by complications associated with the second electrode, which is required in conventional dual chamber devices. Therefore, BIOTRONIK has developed a new electrode called the LinoxSMART S DX that, when used in conjunction with the Lumax DX ICD, offers dual-chamber detection without the risks associated with the...
