Intravitreal Plasminogen

Intravitreal plasminogen is the administration of plasminogen, an inactive precursor of the fibrinolytic enzyme plasmin, into the vitreous cavity of the eye. Following injection, local plasminogen activators convert plasminogen to plasmin, which can break down fibrin and other components of the extracellular matrix involved in abnormal ocular deposits or adhesions. This approach is being studied in conditions associated with impaired fibrinolysis, including ocular manifestations of plasminogen deficiency, and may help clarify how localized enzyme replacement influences tissue remodeling. Intravitreal plasminogen also provides a research framework for evaluating targeted treatments that act within the eye while limiting systemic exposure.

2007

Intravitreous injection is a widely used technique in visual sciences research for ocular diseases or as direct application of local treatment. This video demonstrated a protocol for intravitreous injection using a 1ml syringe with glass pipette. Useful tips about avoiding massive bleeding and lens damage are given.

Measuring Microglial Uptake of Intravitreally-Delivered Fluorescent Particles Using Flow Cytometry

This video demonstrates flow cytometry for measuring microglial uptake of fluorescent bioparticles after intravitreal delivery in a mouse eye. Flow cytometry detects live cells expressing CD11b and distinguishes phagocytic microglia cells exhibiting green fluorescence from other myeloid cells, including Ly6C-expressing monocytes and Ly6G-expressing neutrophils.

Bacterial Endophthalmitis Mouse Model: A Method for Generating Bacterial Endophthalmitis via Intravitreal Injection of Bacterial Suspension into Eye of Mouse

2025

This video describes a method for generating a mouse model that mimics bacterial endophthalmitis – an intraocular infection resulting from a bacterial invasion into the eye’s vitreous cavity – via intravitreal injection of a bacterial suspension into the eye. This mouse model helps study the disease mechanism and evaluate therapeutics for it.
