Lipid Layer Thickness

Lipid layer thickness describes the width of a lipid membrane, typically referring to the hydrophobic core of a cell membrane or lipid bilayer, and is important because it shapes membrane stability and molecular transport. It depends on lipid composition, hydrocarbon-chain length, saturation, and interactions with cholesterol, which alter how tightly lipids pack and how the membrane deforms or allows molecules to cross. In medicine, measuring or modeling lipid layer thickness helps researchers understand cell signaling, membrane protein function, drug-membrane interactions, and changes associated with disease. This property also informs the design of liposomes, lipid nanoparticles, and other membrane-based delivery systems.

Mammalian integument contains solvent-extractable lipids that can provide chemical compositions characteristic of individual species. This paper presents a routine method for separating broad lipid classes isolated from integumentary tissues using thin layer chromatography and determining the triacylglyceride profile by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry.
