Liver Hypertrophy

Liver hypertrophy is an increase in liver size caused primarily by enlargement of existing hepatocytes, and it can reflect adaptation, disease, or altered metabolic demand. It develops when signals such as increased workload, hormonal stimulation, or exposure to certain drugs activate intracellular pathways that increase protein synthesis, organelle content, and cellular function. Unlike hyperplasia, which increases cell number, hypertrophy changes the size and capacity of individual liver cells. In medicine, recognizing this distinction helps clinicians interpret hepatomegaly, assess drug-related or metabolic effects, and understand how the liver responds to injury, regeneration, and chronic disease.

Ascending Aortic Constriction in Rats for Creation of Pressure Overload Cardiac Hypertrophy Model

We describe a stepwise procedure for creating pressure overload and left ventricular hypertrophy in Wistar rats by constriction of the ascending aorta using a small metallic clip. This model is extensively used for studying remodeling changes during cardiac hypertrophy and for identifying and evaluating strategies for regression of such changes.

The Influence of Liver Resection on Intrahepatic Tumor Growth

A high incidence of tumor recurrence after resection of liver metastases remains an unsolved problem. The illustrated mouse model may be useful to investigate the reasons for such recurrences. It combines a liver resection model with intrahepatic tumor cell injection for the first time.

Cellular Adaptation II: Hypertrophy

Hypertrophy is the increase in the size of individual cells, resulting in the enlargement of a tissue or organ. Unlike hyperplasia, which involves an increase in cell number, hypertrophy is characterized by an increase in cell volume. This process often occurs in response to higher functional demand or hormonal stimulation, leading to the production of more structural proteins and organelles, thereby enhancing the cells' work capacity. There are two primary types of hypertrophy: physiological...

The study of liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (SECs) must be performed with primary cells obtained from the animal as no cell lines exist. This method relies on liver digestion and differential centrifugation for SEC purification for subsequent culturing and experimentation.

Technique of Minimally Invasive Transverse Aortic Constriction in Mice for Induction of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy

The aim of this protocol is to describe step-by-step the technique of minimally invasive transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in mice. By elimination of intubation and ventilation which are mandatory for the commonly used standard procedure, minimally invasive TAC simplifies the operative procedure and reduces the strain put on the animal.
