Osteopathic Maneuvers

Osteopathic maneuvers are hands-on diagnostic and therapeutic techniques used in osteopathic medicine to assess and influence the musculoskeletal system and its relationship to overall function. Practitioners apply controlled pressure, stretching, positioning, or joint movement to identify tissue restrictions and support changes in mobility, muscle tone, and somatic function. Techniques may include soft-tissue treatment, muscle energy, myofascial release, and articulatory or high-velocity, low-amplitude methods, selected according to the patient’s findings and clinical needs. In medical practice, these approaches can complement conventional care for conditions involving pain, restricted motion, and mechanical dysfunction while strengthening physical examination and patient-centered treatment planning.

Cited by 50 •

2014

Pneumonia is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. Osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT) may be utilized as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of pneumonia to enhance biomechanical and immune function; and ultimately, to reduce hospital stay, duration of antibiotics, incidence of respiratory failure, and mortality. In this video-article, we will review randomized controlled studies on the use of OMT in pneumonia patients, as well as demonstrate specific hands-on...

The ValsalvaAnalyzer software includes functions to analyze continuous beat-to-beat electrocardiogram and blood pressure (BP) measurements recorded during the Valsalva maneuver (VM). The computed clinical biomarkers and estimated model outputs provide insight into sympathetic and parasympathetic regulation of heart rate and BP during the VM.
