Periodontal Surgery Planning

Periodontal surgery planning is the systematic process of assessing gum and supporting bone disease, selecting an appropriate procedure, and preparing for safe, predictable treatment. Clinicians integrate periodontal probing, clinical attachment measurements, radiographs, medical history, and patient-specific risk factors to identify defects and determine whether procedures such as flap surgery, bone grafting, or guided tissue regeneration are indicated. Careful planning establishes treatment goals, surgical access, materials, and follow-up needs while supporting informed patient decisions. In medicine and dentistry, it helps control infection, preserve teeth, restore damaged periodontal structures, and improve long-term oral health outcomes.

Here, we present a protocol to locally induce apical periodontitis in mice. We show how to drill a hole in the mouse's tooth and expose its pulp, in order to cause local inflammation. Analysis methods to investigate the nature of this inflammation, such as micro-CT and histology, are also demonstrated.
