Posterior Ligament Complex

The posterior ligament complex is a group of spinal ligaments and facet joint capsules that forms a key stabilizing structure along the back of the vertebral column. It includes the supraspinous and interspinous ligaments, ligamentum flavum, and facet capsules, which work as a posterior tension band to resist excessive flexion, separation, and rotational motion between vertebrae. In medicine, evaluating posterior ligament complex integrity is especially important in thoracolumbar spinal trauma, where disruption may indicate mechanical instability. Clinical examination and imaging, including magnetic resonance imaging, help assess injury severity and guide decisions about monitoring, bracing, or surgical stabilization.
