Retinal Dark Adaptation

Retinal dark adaptation is the physiological process by which the eye regains sensitivity to dim light after exposure to bright illumination, enabling vision across changing light conditions. It occurs as photoreceptors adjust their response, with cones supporting early recovery and rods becoming increasingly sensitive as the visual pigment rhodopsin regenerates and retinal signaling adapts. In medicine, dark-adaptation testing evaluates rod and cone function, helping assess visual complaints and identify dysfunction within the retina or visual pathway. Measuring the time course and sensitivity of recovery also supports research into retinal disease, photoreceptor biology, and therapeutic outcomes.

Adhering to international standards and maintaining retinal dark adaptation are critical to acquire valid full-field electroretinogram responses in the diagnosis and management of inherited retinal diseases. A practical protocol using a portable darkroom is provided to obtain full-field electroretinogram for infants and children under sedation or general anesthesia in the operating room setting.

Dark Triad and Person Perception

2025

Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et al. (2014) explored...
