Sonication Fluid Analysis

Sonication fluid analysis is a microbiological method that examines fluid collected after ultrasonic treatment of a removed medical implant, helping detect microorganisms that may be attached to its surface. Ultrasound generates cavitation forces that disrupt biofilms and release bacteria or fungi into the surrounding fluid, which can then undergo culture or molecular testing. In medicine, the method supports evaluation of suspected implant-associated infections, including infections involving orthopedic prostheses, when organisms may be difficult to recover from conventional tissue samples. By improving access to biofilm-associated pathogens, sonication fluid analysis can aid diagnosis, guide antimicrobial selection, and inform clinical management.

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The material comprising the living "organic" share of any ecosystem (leaves, fungi, bark, tissue; Figure 1) differs fundamentally from the material of the non-living "inorganic" share (rocks and their constituent minerals, oxygen, water, metals). Organic material contains carbon linked to a series of other carbon and hydrogen molecules (Figure 2), which distinguishes it from inorganic material. Carbon's wide valency range...

Differential diagnostics in painful arthroplasty is crucial for treatment success. Joint aspiration is routinely performed preoperatively. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction of the joint aspirate and the sonication fluid, a feasible tool for quick pathogen detection from these samples is described.

A method for mass spectrometric analysis of endogenous peptides in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is presented. By employing molecular weight cut-off filtration, chromatographic pre-fractionation, mass spectrometric analysis and a subsequent combination of peptide identification strategies, it was possible to expand the known CSF peptidome nearly ten-fold compared to previous studies.

Synovial Fluid Analysis to Identify Osteoarthritis

Synovial fluid analysis under transmitted, polarized, and compensated light microscopy is used to evaluate the inflammatory or non-inflammatory nature of a sample through simple steps. It is particularly useful in osteoarthritis to detect calcium crystals and identify a more severe subset of osteoarthritis.
