Submucosal Injection

Submucosal injection is a medical technique that delivers fluid into the tissue layer beneath a mucous membrane, creating localized separation or altering the surrounding tissue. During endoscopic procedures, the injected solution expands the submucosal space and lifts a lesion away from deeper muscle layers, helping clinicians distinguish target tissue and reduce the risk of injury during resection. Depending on the clinical purpose, injections may also support bleeding control or mark a treatment site. This technique is important in gastrointestinal medicine, where it improves the precision and safety of procedures such as endoscopic mucosal resection and submucosal dissection.

We developed a new ex vivo model that applies constant tension to the porcine gastric specimen. This development made it possible to evaluate the performance (the height and duration of the submucosal elevation) of various SIMs accurately. The detailed setup methodology of this new model is explained.
